What Is House of the Dragon Season 3 About?
In Season 3, the factions of House Targaryen engage in a war like no other. Rhaenyra seems poised for victory with an army of dragons under her control, Aegon II fleeing the capital, and a fraught bargain struck with Alicent. But the balance of power shifts in unforeseen ways as loyalties fracture, bonds reshape, and unpredictable new players enter the fray.
The season covers the events of Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin. Ryan Condal serves as the sole showrunner for the season.
Episode 1 Recap — Battle of the Gullet

Episode 1, titled “Salt and Sea, Fire and Blood,” follows Rhaenyra as she positions herself to take King’s Landing while the Triarchy sails to take on Corlys in the Gullet.
Jacaerys Velaryon refuses to allow his mother to fly into the battle and takes her place himself, riding Vermax alongside Baela on Moondancer. The two dragons begin burning the Triarchy fleet. But the Triarchy uses weighted scorpion bolts to trap the dragons mid-flight.
The arrival of Rhaena Targaryen on Sheepstealer inadvertently turns the tide against Team Black. Jace pulls back at the last moment to avoid striking his own cousin, leaving himself exposed to the Triarchy’s weapons.
Vermax is taken down and, stranded in the water, Jacaerys is then shot by multiple arrows. Vermax drowns. Jacaerys does not survive.
The episode ends with Rhaenyra still locked inside Dragonstone, her eldest surviving son dead in the Gullet.
Episode 1 Ending Explained
Jacaerys’ decision changes the entire war. By keeping Rhaenyra inside Dragonstone, he protected his mother but sacrificed himself in the process.
Harry Collett, who plays Jacaerys, said of the episode: “Jace’s death really opened the floodgates to all-out war. It’s no longer going to be ‘we shouldn’t go to war’, now no one’s going to be thinking about that. It’s just going to be all-out death and chaos.”
