The 2027 London Marathon has been confirmed as a two-day event, with organisers announcing that up to 100,000 runners will take part in a one-off special edition of the world’s most popular marathon.
The event will be held across Saturday, April 24 and Sunday, April 25, 2027, marking the first time in the race’s history that it will span two days.
Record Demand Behind the Decision
The expansion comes in direct response to unprecedented demand for places.
A record 1.33 million people have already applied for the 2027 edition, following more than £90 million raised for charity by participants in the 2026 race. The 2026 edition also attracted a record 59,830 finishers.
What the Two-Day Format Means for Runners
The expanded format is expected to raise more than £150 million for charities, a significant increase on the £90 million raised in 2026. London Marathon CEO Hugh Brasher also estimates the event could deliver a £400 million economic boost for the United Kingdom.
Runners whose ballot entries are successfully drawn in July will be allocated to either Saturday or Sunday. Participants will run on one day only, not both.
Mayor of London Confirms Support
London Mayor Sadiq Khan confirmed his support for the expanded event, saying: “London is the sporting capital of the world and I am delighted that, for one year only in 2027, the world-famous TCS London Marathon will welcome 100,000 runners.”
